A Brief History of Advertising - By 3E1


Welcome to our advertising wiki. It is filling up nicely, but do remember that it is a work in progress. Other than this little introduction here and the task page, the page has been created entirely by my S3 English class who have worked very hard to produce what you see. The links to the other pages are on the right and if you have time, check out our game's page for some fun. Feel free to join in discussions which the pupils have created, or start your own thread. A long time ago on a planet not too far away, advertisement was born ...
In 1704 a newspaper, the Boston News Letter, was published and in it was an advertisement! It was a statement looking for someone to buy an Oyster Bay, Long Island, estate. In 1841, there was a huge break through in advertising as the very first advertising agency was set up in Philadelphia by a Volney Palmer. In 1930 advertising took a step up in the world and moved on to the TV but it was done illegally and Boston's W1XAV was fined for broadcasting a small advert for a small fur industry. The very first television advert was broadcast on the 1st of July 1941. The brand of watchmaker 'Bulova' payed 9 million dollars for this advert and it was played on the New York Station called WNBT and was played in a break in the game of baseball between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. The advert was 10 seconds long and used the slogan "America runs on Bulova time". Since then adverts have continued to grow.
World War I saw some important advances in advertising as governments on all sides used ads as propaganda. The British used advertising as propaganda to convince its own citizens to fight, and also to persuade the Americans to join. No less a political commentator than Hitler concluded (in Mein Kampf) that Germany lost the war because it lost the propaganda battle: he did not make the same mistake when it was his turn.

The first advertising agency in America was opened in 1841 by Volney B. Palmer in Phildelphia.



Advertising used the latest media to its advantage in the first part of the twentieth century: the use of cinemas and radios to send out commercial advertisements. In the 1920s these uses of advertising showed great success but in 1929 the Wall St crash of America put an end to widespread wealth. The Great Depression that followed and World War Two meant that from 1929 until 1930/40 people did not have the needed income to buy advertised products, but the 1950s saw customers regain the money that they needed to react to the now growing corporation of advertising.
